On Live Voyage Reports: This Week & Into Next, Cruising Cuba

On Friday, Aaron Saunders boards the Louis Cristal on a weeklong voyage that completely circumnavigates Cuba. As a Canadian, Aaron’s freedom to travel to and in Cuba is not restricted (as is the case for U.S. citizens). Those of us who live under the banner of the stars and stripes will need to enjoy his reports from our arm chairs, with the knowledge that one day the final vestiges of the Cold War will collapse, restoring U.S. citizens’ freedom to once again travel to Cuba.

Aaron says he is excited to see the “Yank Tanks” – hulking Chevrolet cars from the 1950’s that are, improbably, still running to this day. Taxis are even nicknamed chevy by the locals, in a nod to the famous American automobile manufacturer. Cuba also boasts nine different UNESCO World Heritage sites, Aaron writes, the vast majority of which the 1,200 people onboard the Louis Cristal will have the good fortune to experience firsthand.

Not to be confused with Trinidad & Tobago, Trinidad, Cuba is a UNESCO World Heritage site notable for its striking Spanish Colonial architecture. Photo courtesy of Cuba Cruise
