Designed In 2008? Regent’s New Seven Seas Explorer

Regent Seven Seas Cruises will expand its fleet to four ships in 2016. With the introduction of Seven Seas Explorer, Regent Seven Seas Cruises’ overall fleet capacity will grow nearly 40 percent, making the brand the world’s largest luxury cruise line.

An all-balcony, all-suite ship like Seven Seas Mariner, Regent’s new Seven Seas Explorer, built at a price tag of US$450, begins sailing in 2016, but its design dates back to 2008.

In July 2013, Regent Seven Seas Cruises announced it had entered into an agreement with Italy’s Fincantieri shipyard to construct its first new vessel in more than a decade: the 738-guest Seven Seas Explorer.

But it was back in 2008 when Regent tapped guests for input on a new ship. The luxury cruise line offered customers a 10-night, Caribbean cruise on the Seven Seas Mariner with a “Build Your Ship” theme that included a town hall session with Regent’s top executive team and 16 subsequent one-hour brainstorming sessions during which guests were asked what they would and would not like to see on a new Regent ship. At 54,000 gross registered tons, Seven Seas Explorer will be the largest vessel in the line’s fleet — and most expensive to build, with a price tag of US$450 million. By way of comparison, the line’s 2001-built Seven Seas Mariner can carry 700 guests, measures around 48,000 gross registered tons and was US$240 million to build.

Seven Seas Explorer will be an all-balcony, all-suite ship like Seven Seas Mariner. At 732 feet in length and with a beam of 102 feet, guests can expect the same spaciousness found on the line’s other vessels, which also include Seven Seas Navigator and Seven Seas Voyager.
