From the city center, motor to Djurgården canal and return by Gamla Stan. The 50-minute tour is well worth it for a perspective of Stockholm from the water in a relaxed fashion.

If Stockholm is a city of islands (14 of them), then it only stands to reason that the city is also one of waterways. Yes, there have been the usual comparisons to Venice (St. Petersburg has also been compared to the Italian city), but if you see gondolas, check your bearings: You may have boarded the wrong flight and instead of disembarking in Arlanda (Stockholm’s exceptionally beautiful airport) you may have trundled off the jetway into Venice’s aptly named Marco Polo International Airport.

Stockholm and Venice do indeed share the spectacle of beauty on water, and one great way to see the Swedish capital is to step aboard a boat for one of the many tours offered on the waterways. One such tour is he Royal Canal Tour, featured in the video below. The tour takes less than an hour to complete. You can board near the Grand Hotel or at Nybroviken, near Stureplan.

Be sure to take your camera, and take note of the landmarks you’re passing. The Royal Canal Tour travels alongside Strandvagen to circle Djurgarden, that beautiful nature park that you’ll no doubt want to return to. On Djurgarden, rent a bike or take a hike. Visit the Vasa Museum and don’t miss Skansen, and be sure to pack a picnic or pick up something at Rosendals Tradgard and have lunch on a blanket under the apple trees.

The Royal Canal Tour also passes Gamla Stan. Prepare your camera to snap away at the scenic waterfront of colorful buildings and the Royal Palace situated in the Old Town.

There are of course many other options to see Stockholm from the water, such as dinner cruises and archipelago tours. You can travel under the bridges of Stockholm on a boat or chug out to Drottningholm, the UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to the Royal family.

Visit Stockholm and let yourself drift on a beautiful boat through one of the world’s most enchanting cities.

Have you explored Stockholm by water? If so, please let us know about your experience. Meantime, enjoy the video!
