AMAWATERWAYS currently operates a single luxury vessel on the Mekong, La Marguerite, which entered service in 2009. The company has new ships on order to fulfill high demand for this up-and-coming river cruise destination. Read more about La Marguerite | Passports Please, Visas & Getting There
You'll need more than your passport to cruise the Mekong. Our cruise required a multi-entry visa for Vietnam (expedited from the embassy in Washington, D.C. for $120 per person) and a single-entry visa for Cambodia, which can be processed and purchased for $20 on the ship.
Why a multi-entry visa for Vietnam? Because we cruised from Vietnam into Cambodia, then flew back to Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) has far more air connections to the rest of the world than does its Cambodian counterparts.
Our carrier, by the way, was Thai Air, highly recommended. See Better Than Business Class? Certainly, A Better Value

Don't Put It Off, Go Now On one afternoon, we rode oxcarts back to the ship, through small villages on dirt roads where it appeared no tourist had ever been. With only a few vessels operating on the Mekong, many of the villages along the river aren't accustomed to tourists. In some towns, we were the attractions. People were exceptionally friendly, waving and smiling.
Our advice: If the Mekong is on your bucket list, go now, while it is unspoiled. And if the Mekong is not on your bucket list, pencil it in. You won't regret it.

Kid-Friendly Destination My 14-year-old daughter was not the oldest or the youngest kid on our cruise. A Dutch couple had brought along their children, ages 5 and 7. A 17-year-old also traveled with us. Asked if the cruise was kid-appropriate, my daughter said it doesn't matter what age you are. "Anyone can appreciate what we're seeing and experiencing."
In her dad's opinion, traveling the Mekong and similar destinations is essential to developing a comprehensive worldview. Our trip was transformational for my daughter -- and for me. She got to see how people on the other side of the world lived, and I got to spend time with a wonderful 14-year-old. Travel transforms.
