AMAWATERWAYS’ MS AMADAGIO has been named to Conde Nast Traveler’s 2011 list of Top 20 River Cruise Ships. The ranking in the newly created river ship category is part of the publication’s 11th annual compilation of the world’s top passenger cruise ships.

The results were tabulated from the votes of thousands of Conde Nast Traveler readers who participated in the magazine’s Readers’ Choice Survey. The top 20 river cruise ships were determined from combined scores in seven categories: itineraries/schedule, shore excursions, crew/service, cabins, food/dining, activities/facilities and design/layout.

“We are very pleased to be included in this list of the top river cruise ships, especially from such a selective readership. The fact that Conde Nast Traveler has added a river cruise category to their annual compilation of the world’s top cruise ships highlights the growing importance of the river cruise industry,” said Rudi Schreiner, President of AMAWATERWAYS.

The 150-passenger AMADAGIO is part of a fleet that has changed the face of river cruising. Making its debut in 2006, the AMADAGIO features French balconies; spacious 170 sq. ft. staterooms and 255 sq. ft. suites; complimentary Internet and first-run Hollywood movies in staterooms and Wi-Fi throughout the vessel; a fitness room, sauna, massage, hair and beauty salon; elevators; walking track on Sun Deck plus a fleet of bicycles for passengers to use on their own or on complimentary guided bicycle tours. Passengers aboard the AMADAGIO enjoy complimentary wine, beer and soft drinks with dinner; complimentary bottled water and specialty coffees; daily shore excursions tailored to desired walking pace, plus nightly onboard entertainment. For a full review, see AMADAGIO.

In 2011, AMAWATERWAYS will operate 12 custom-designed vessels in Europe, Russia, Vietnam and Cambodia. The line will introduce the new 161-passenger MS AMAVERDE in Europe, featuring twin balconies (a step-out balcony and a French balcony); the newly-redesigned 212-passenger MS AMAKATARINA on the Volga-Baltic Waterway in Russia, featuring balconies in more than 70 percent of her staterooms and the new 124-passenger MS AMALOTUS on the Mekong River in Vietnam and Cambodia, featuring balconies in more than 90 percent of her staterooms.

Mekong Memory: Soup’s On!

On April 18, 2010, in AMAWATERWAYS, Asia, La Marguerite, by Ralph Grizzle

Noodle Station, originally uploaded by Ralph Grizzle.

During breakfast and lunch on La Marguerite, there was a “Fresh Noodle Station,” which prepared delicious noodle soups. Also available: a buffet of Western and Asian foods, fresh fruits and cheeses.

Noodle soup, an option for breakfast and lunch

Beer and wine were included for both lunch and dinner. The Vietnamese beer was good, especially after a morning of touring, but the Vietnamese wine – well, what can I say? As you might expect, it left a lot to be desired. Next season, however, AMAWATERWAYS will upgrade the wines on La Marguerite, probably to New Zealand or Australian vintages.

Dinner was a sit-down-and-be-served affair. Most of the passengers I spoke with were pleased with the dinner choices and quality. You’re not getting Michelin-starred cuisine on La Marguerite, but the food was good, and getting better. AMAWATERWAYS is using its European chefs to train the kitchen staff.

For those who need their comfort foods, hamburgers and cheeseburgers were on the “Always Available” menu.

As noted in another post, there were no illnesses that I know of from food on the ship. All water used, to cook and wash vegetables, was treated. Bottled water was supplied for staterooms and tours.

Still two more days remaining on the Seabourn Odyssey, but I wanted to take a break from the coverage to invite you to join me for a “virtual river cruise” next week on AMAWATERWAYS’ new Amacello.

We’re sailing from Budapest to Istanbul, but I’ll be on board only from Sunday, August 2, departing Budapest, until Wednesday, August 5, when I step off in Belgrade.

Please leave your comments here on the site if you have questions about river cruising, about AMAWATERWAYS or about the new Amacello. I’m happy to oblige.

You can follow along here on avidcruiser.com, but you might also visit Avid Cruiser’s sister site, www.rivercruiseadvisor.com.
