AMAKATARINA Ship Review

The most luxurious ship ever built for Russian rivers, MS Amakatarina is the perfect showcase for the legendary and historic waterways of Russia.
Originally built in 1980, AmaWaterways gutted the ship down to her steel frame in 2010 and completely rebuilt her. The result is a brand-new Amakatarina, transformed into one of the most modern and elegant vessels to cruise the Volga for years to come. She is 443 feet long, 52 feet wide, and can carry 212 guests in 106 staterooms.

In her newly renovated incarnation, Amakatarina offers ten distinct types of stateroom:
- Category F staterooms are a snug 110 square feet and are located all the way forward on Deck 4. There are four staterooms in this category, all of which feature ocean views and bathrooms with separate showers – a rarity on many Russian-based river cruise ships.
- Category E staterooms are spread out over Decks 3 and 4, and come in at 135 square feet. They feature all the amenities of the Category F staterooms.
- Category D staterooms represent a large jump in overall space at 205 square feet. Featuring ocean views, these staterooms are located on Decks 3 and 4.
- Category B and C are located on Decks 2 and 3, and are the first level of accommodation to include a private balcony. They measure a very comfortable 238 square feet.
- Category A staterooms also include a private balcony, but are slightly smaller than Category B and C at 230 square feet. They are located on Deck 1.
- Category BS is the first Suite level aboard Amakatarina. Located on Decks 2 and 3, these “Bolshoi Suites” measure 280 square feet for enhanced passenger comfort. There are only four of these suites, however: 230, 210, 321 and 308. All feature a private balcony.
- Category MS “Mariinsky Suites” are even larger at 320 square feet. There are eight of these suites, located on Decks 2 and 3. All feature a private balcony.
- High atop Deck 1 are the Amakatarina’s two Category HS “Hermitage Suites.” At 270 square feet, they are slightly smaller than all other suite categories, but offer a more commanding location aboard the ship.
- Finally, Category IS represents the ship’s lone “Imperial Suite” located all the way forward on Deck 3. Featuring a private, forward-facing balcony, this suite is the largest aboard Amakatarina at 432 square feet.
As with many ships, these suites can sell out quickly, so it can pay to book well in advance.

Aboard Amakatarina, passengers can take in the views from the forward-facing Panorama Lounge, of amble up to the bar and nightclub for an evening drink. A Solarium, sauna, main dining room, conference hall, and an infirmary round out the mix.
River Cruisers Should Know!
- The deck numbers aboard Amakatarina differ from the industry-standard: Deck 4 is the lowest deck, while Deck 1 is highest. On most ships this is reversed, with lower deck numbers being closer to the waterline.
- The ship features a passenger elevator.
- While Category E staterooms can technically sleep two people, at 135 square feet many cruisers may find this category to feel rather cramped.
