Upside: Entertainment first class. have never seen anything like the Independence of the Seas, Food excellent, Service first class, Cabins first rate.Ice shows where out of this world. Rome was wonderful but because of the volume of people we could not get into the Colosium
All the countries we vivited were very good.

Downside: Fighting for a sunbed, seats in the Horizon Restaurant morning and lunchtime was very difficult to find, wheelchairs up the back of your legs all the time. I think the pub area should be at least three times the size it is as you could never get a seat, even though we were first sitting. Seemed that seats/tables were not available for the amount of persons on the ship. We sailed from Southampton on the 6 Sep 08. Firstly Royal Caribbean could not find our keys/tickets once found we went to our cabins to find the keys did not work had to apply for more at reception!!!!! Drinks were very expensive compared with P&O

What a coincidence. I checked out your site, cyclemania, and saw your entry on Quebec. I am headed to Quebec on Wednesday. We'll nearly cross paths! Enjoy the Netherlands. The cycling is wonderful. I'll subscribe to your rss feed in the meantime. Safe cycling . . . Ralph

My wife an I leave for the Netherlands this Thursday evening. We will be touring the country for 2 weeks on traditional Dutch fiets.

I plan on doing many posts on the "bike scene" over there.

Nice review of the Independence. I just enjoyed a 14-day voyage. We stated in an Owner's suite on Deck 10 and it was great!!! I especially enjoyed the pool lay out. Everone seemed to respect the intent for each style of pool from Adult quiet to Kid Fun!

You should read the link you provided more thoroughly.

On the subject of Quebec, it says " . . . only Quebec is officially unilingual (French only)."

And as you're using Wikipedia to rid the world of ignorance, click on, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quebec where you will read that Quebec "is the only Canadian province with a predominantly French-speaking population and the only one whose sole official language is French at the provincial level."

We cruised with Rudolph during the Christmas holiday 2007 on the River Empress. It was the best vacation we've ever had! Rudolph and his crew made our trip very special. We were concerned about being there on Christmas Day but they made us feel very much at home and like a family. He has a high standard of excellence for his crew and they seem happy to meet and exceed that expectation. We are very excited to cruise again and have told everyone we know how great our experience was.

Just a note that the Olympic Peninsula is not a commuter island. It should be visited though with at least 1-2 days in mind to explore Olympic National Park. Go from the sea to the mountains to the hot springs to the rain forest in just two days!

"Welcome to Quebec, Canada’s sole French-speaking province"

Um, are you joking? The *entire country* is officially bilingual. Here's a link that might make you less ignorant: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilingualism_in_Canada

Throughout Canada there are Francophone communities, and throughout Acadie you'll often hear French more than English. Wow, I really do a double-take when I see such nonsense posted !

My husband and I were on a Crystal Cruise on the Symphony about 3 years ago. I hope they have changed cruise directors along with their upgraded ship. We are in our 50's and were told that the ship really caters to the 70' and 80's crowd. We had a very unpleasant experience. When we requested music more to the under 70's crowd we were chastised. Any request was met with disdain and rudeness. We wrote a letter to Crystal when we returned, only to get a nasty letter back! I don't think I could get my husband on a Crystal cruise again, which is very unfortunate as we found the excursions, food and other staff of the best quality.

Just returned from the Windsurf and we did enjoy the cruise HOWEVER
there was a different feel aboard this beautiful Sailing vessel. New owners have improved the amenities in the staterooms but other things have turned our 4th Windstar cruise into what might be our last. Who decides how close to shore the boat is moored? Is the closer you are to shore the more it cost? If that is the case "Penny Wise Pound Foolish" The Windstar is forgetting that it is the people aboard that will suffer from having to ride their tender for 20-30 minutes to get to shore. Spending less than a full day in St Barts was less than thrilling for even me. Il des Saint - what a waste of time!!! Nevis - If we did not have friends staying there there is not much to do there. St Maarten beaches were crowded and chairs were impossible to obtain. The feeling of being on your own Yacht somehow escaped me this trip. Escaping to Islands that the BIG SHIPS can't go seemed to be forgotten as what separates Windstar from other cruise lives. Tours, I heard some horror stories of the tour that gave them great views of local dumpsters. Nor much went into making sure that it was worth offering. Scuba - Many people I have met during our 4 cruises with Windstar are avid divers. Not having Certified Divers aboard is a Big Mistake and for those who love the sport will think twice than to book on the Windstar when it downgraded that activity. The last 3 cruises when we had a Team of Certified Dive Instructors on board there was an excitement when we used to meet in the library and signed up with Randy and Barbara. At least 20 people came to the dive meeting where we met many people from past cruises who you remembered. When you choose a dive company you better make sure they live up to the standards that Windstar portrays as 180 degrees from ordinary - 180 degrees from what??? They took a 360 degree turn for the worst on to many things. I used to rave about the food on board the Windstar - This year we were really disappointed in the quality of the food served. It used to feel more personalized and and now seems more commercial. Service during dinner!!! There was a disconnect somewhere in the dining room. Service was slow and the kitchen could not keep up with the demand. Maybe we should get Gordon Ramsay to help them out or find out what they are doing wrong and certainly what they can do better. I believe they should could better tours for the guests of the Windstar than what was presented on our last cruise. One more positive is the STAFF. These men and women could not do much more to please every guest on board. As I said in the earlier, had fun-could have been better --I only hope they don't get worse before they figure it out.

We are on board the QV, bound for NY from Southampton with the QE2 sailing in tandem with us. I believe the QM2 will already be there in NY and suspect both ships will berth close to wherever the QM2 is, will let you know if I find out anything prior to leaving on the 6th January.

I love Holland America line too. This love affair begun over 25 years ago on the famous Wilhelminakade in Rotterdam where once the HAL liners departed to New York. Together with my father we were attending the departure of the Stefan Batory on her voyage to Montreal. She was one time the Holland America Liner tss Maasdam of 1952. My father told me about the famous HAL liners. From that day onwards i was in love with De Lijn as we in Rotterdam called with great affection the Holland America Line. Started collecting cards, books, pictures, posters etc. etc.

Special was the day the Maasdam 5 made a call at Rotterdam after more then 20 years. HAL was back where they belonged. A big party on the docks and thousands came to see the Maasdam and waved goodbye when she departed.

Now the fleet have returned under the flag of the Netherlands and homeport of Rotterdam. My ties with HAL is stronger then ever. Was guest at the dedication of the Oosterdam, VIP aboard the Westerdam when she had her maiden call at home port Rotterdam and sailed the Zaandam to Alaska.

HAL and me both born and raised in Rotterdam the Netherlands. We will always be Rotterdammers.

This is why i love the Holland Amerika Lijn.

Does anybody know what the planned docking arrangements are in NY on Jan. 13? Everything I see infers all 3 ships will be docking in Brooklyn which I don't believe to be possible!? Are the 3 ships going to rendezvous while entering or exiting the harbor or both? If anybody has any information on what is planned that day it would be helpful. Thanks!

I just returned from a fun Alaskan cruise on board the M.S. Noordam(late July 07). It's a beautiful ship with a friendly staff and doesn't have as many passengers as the other big cruise lines. Everything looks pretty new. Our verandah staterooms were smallish but the beds (twins) had very comfortable mattresses. My complaints include the rip-off prices for internet use, the lack of a self-service laundry, and the very short stays in a couple of the ports. I also didn't understand why they charged for the arts and crafts workshops. I've been on three other cruise lines and they've had fun, free craft classes which would have been a plus on this cruise. The Glacier Bay cruise day is wonderful and awe-inspiring. There was plenty to do on the cruise and Shane, the cruise director was loads of fun. We also enjoyed Randy, who played in the Piano Bar. We also enjoyed the evening entertainment in the big Vista theater.
I wish the cruise had been about 2 days longer! We left from Seattle and went to Glacier Bay, Juneau, Sitka, Ketichikan, and Victoria before returning to Seattle. I recommend the catamaran ride to the Misty Fjords (Ketchikan) and the bus city tour and high tea at the Empress Hotel in Victoria.

Just came back from a cruise in the Emerald Princess two weeks ago. Then I discovered this site which contain a lot of insights about cruising. I would be a constant visitor.

Thank you

I've been on at least a dozen cruises, but with rare exception, I never met anyone that became lasting friends. On the Seadream, with only 92 souls on the guest roster, there was hardly anyone I didn't meet. And for some reason, they were all nice folks. And so was the crew, who became more like friends than servers. All of which leads to the unexplainable aura or spirit which I felt strongly during my week aboard. I can understand now why 35% of the guests had been on two or more cruises and why we will be back too.

The cruise was VERY nice. My favorite aspect was sleeping on deck. But having the crew know your name by the second day, and the barman know what you drink by the second visit to the bar were also very nice.

They ran out of buckwheat pancake batter one morning - and we were going to have to dash to make the shuttle to land, so we could not wait until the next batch was ready. Next morning, the pancakes were waiting for us when we appeared for breakfast. the Buckwheat banana pancakes were wonderful!

The crew was more than cheerful. They appeared to be enjoying themselves. And the chef mentioned that he enjoyed working on this yacht much more than he enjoyed doing the same on land. THe fact that the crew likes this yacht says a lot about the cruise line and the quality of the experience.

The link below provides a view of the ports visited by SeaDream II this last voyage, from the viewpoint of medieval in general, and clothing/cloth interests in particular.

I am a travel consultant specializing in cruises, and offer Princess Cruises to the majority of my requests as Princess is, overall, the best value, in all respects, to the majority of travellers. The above clip of the galley tour, with Chef Marzi introducing Princess' new Chef's Table, is excellent and a great promo for new and prospective Princess and cruise travellers. Please offer more!!! I plan to email this to many clients. Thank you. Barbara Nelson/Barbara's Travel/San Marin Travel

We are sailing on Emerald princess in September on the Venice to Barcelona itinerary. We have a mini suite on the Dolphin Deck (D302). We are concerned there will be excess noise from the stairway and lifts which are nearby. Can you comment?

RESPONSE FROM RALPH GRIZZLE: I walked up to D302, which is indeed near the elevators. I would have knocked on D302's door, but the occupants had placed their "Privacy Please" placard in the keyhole. So I did the next best thing. I asked the stateroom steward, Jun. He said not to worry. He has never heard any complaints from anyone who has occupied stateroom D302. And Jun said he would be here in September, so that you can take it out on him if he's wrong! But judging from the "Privacy Please" placard at 7 a.m. this morning, the occupants of stateroom D302 were quietly sleeping. Hope this helps!
