Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation, and Ralph Grizzle at last year's Cruise Shipping Miami

Live, From Miami Beach

This week, I, and 10,000 others, are in Miami Beach attending Cruise Shipping Miami (there are also 100,000 or more spring breakers at Miami Beach's doorstep, but that's another story).

We're all here to create better cruise experiences for cruise travelers. My plan is to seek out what's coming down the pike that can improve your cruise experience and relay that via my social media channels, Instagram, Facebook (friend me!) and Twitter. I'll also be reporting, as time allows during this busy week, on avidcruiser.com.

Nearly 1,000 exhibitors from more than 100 countries will be here courting the cruise lines. Destinations will put their best foot forward to show cruise industry itinerary planners what they can offer cruise passengers. Food and wine vendors will provide samples of items they'd like to see on cruise ships. Cruise execs will tell us what's ahead during the State of the Industry and in workshops and break-out sessions. The events run Monday through Thursday.

Planning a trip to Alaska this summer? Be sure to see Lew Deitch's excellent guide to Juneau, America's most isolated state capital - and possibly the world's. You'll find a link to his Juneau guide below.

Need inspiration? Watch these. You'll also find videos below of some of the most inspiring places I visited since last year's event in Miami. If you're compiling a bucket list, I recommend each of them to you.

For those of you here with me in Miami, network, learn a lot and have some fun. For those of you at home, get ready for a better cruise coming your way soon. — Ralph Grizzle

In this free special report, I’ve put together a half dozen actionable items that can make the difference between cruise vacations that are memorable and others that fail to measure up to all you had hoped they would be. I’ve cruised on hundreds of ships, as a solo traveler and with family and friends.  — Ralph Grizzle, The Avid Cruiser

Juneau, Alaska - America's Most Isolated State Capital

Juneau, Alaska - America's Most Isolated State Capital

One of the most popular ports of call on the Alaska Panhandle cruise is Juneau, the capital city of Alaska. It is the third largest urban center in Alaska with just over 32,100 residents. Juneau is, however, the most isolated state capital in the entire nation. No other capital city lacks a highway connection to the outside world. Juneau can only be reached by air or sea.

It is also the only capital city in the nation that borders another country, as the city and borough limits reach to the crest of the mountains to the east that constitute the international boundary.

Antarctica: Exploring The White Continent On Seabourn Quest from Ralph Grizzle on Vimeo. You may also view this video on Youtube. With snow-covered mountains framing its vast and beautiful landscape, with towering glaciers soaring above the continent’s cold but serene sea, and with those funny Charlie Chaplinesque creatures that appear to be clad in tuxedoes, Antarctica is a place that …

Port of Call: Saint-Malo, An Avid Cruiser Feature Video

Trouble viewing the video? View on Youtube. One of Northwest France’s most attractive coastal towns, Saint-Malo has something to offer all cruise ship passengers: sublime scenery, bustling bars, trendy restaurants and cafes, cultural attractions, outdoor activities and Brittany’s best beaches. During my visit, I walked the ancient city wall above and around the town of Saint-Malo; visited Dinard, with its lovely …

On Silver Wind: Silhouettes Of Stromboli & A Video Tour Of Royal Suite 601

On Silver Wind: Silhouettes Of Stromboli & A Video Tour Of Royal Suite 601

Last night, I had the most remarkable experience. At around 3 a.m., drumrolls of thunder woke me from my sleep. I wrapped my bathrobe around me, walked into the living room and pulled back the curtains. What a spectacle! Flashes of lightning streaked the sky, violent yet beautiful. As I watched, the sky brightened and I noticed something I had …

Summing Up Silver Discoverer: Memories From Russia's Far East

Summing Up Silver Discoverer: Memories From Russia's Far East

How do you recap a trip where every day was comprised of peak experiences, sometimes multiple peak experiences? How do you write about a journey to a place that seems nearly as remote as Mars, a region that for me was on the other side of the International Dateline and …

Eight Videos: Cruising Portugal's Douro River

Eight Videos: Cruising Portugal's Douro River

I've just posted eight videos that highlight our recent voyage along Portugal's Douro River with AmaWaterways. The journey, back in July, was one of the more interesting river cruises I have experienced. The region was beautiful, the Portuguese were extremely warm and welcoming (both those who worked on the ship and the people we encountered ashore), and the food and …
