Parting Thoughts About SeaDream I: Old? No. Elegantly Mature, Like Me

It’s hard to leave her, but I have to go. It is time to move on. We’re not breaking up, just taking some time apart. It was her idea. Not mine. I’m sure we’ll be back together one day. Well, you get the metaphor, right?

Before starting this journey a week ago on SeaDream I, I promised to give you Ten Reasons Why You’ll Love This Small, Old Ship. The reasons, in fact, are the same that they were last time I was on board. If you followed along during the past week, you may have read that I turned 55 on this voyage. On October 27, I spent a lovely evening with my significant other, the captain and three other wonderful people.

For once, I was at the receiving end of the Happy Birthday song that we’ve all heard on ships and at restaurants. Staff presented me with a birthday cake and candles to blow out. Of course, the ceremony is always nice, but when it is for you or someone you love, it takes on a special meaning. Thank you to all those who shared that special day with me.

A week ago, when I was only 54, I referred to SeaDream’s twin yachts as old. I think their age is one of their strongest points of appeal. Yes, they were built in the mid-1980s. Avid cruisers will remember them as the original Sea Goddess vessels. But over the years, they have been exceptionally well maintained. They are classic and enduring vessels, beautiful in every way.

They are, in fact, symbolic of the way I like to think of myself: elegantly mature – and getting better everyday.

    Happy belated birthday Ralph. Thanks to your blog. my wife and I are enjoying cruising. We’ve tried Seabourn, then Silverseas and now I’m booking a repositioning Atlantic crossing on SeaDream. My purpose is just to be able to get away from the “Crackberry” for a few days together. Looking forward to the trip. Keep up the great reviews.
