In St. Petersburg, Silver Cloud is docked only steps away from the Hermitage. Of course, you must possess a visa or go with an organized tour to step ashore. Russian regulations, not the ship’s. (To learn more about Russia’s visa requirements, search http://www.portprofiles.com)
Photographed from Silver Cloud’s aft end, in the distance, is the Azamara Journey, roughly 40 percent larger than Silver Cloud but capable of carrying more than twice the number of guests (710 vs. 300).
Azamara Journey is in the premium category while Silver Cloud is in the luxury category. While the designations may mean more to those in the industry than to prospective cruisers, sailings on luxury vessels typically cost more than sailings on premium vessels. Luxury cruises, however, arguably offer the greater value in that nearly everything, with the exception of spa treatments and shore excursions, is included in the fare.
Moreover, luxury cruise fares are have tumbled in recent months, and luxury cruise companies are offering either steep discounts or generous on-board credits (sometimes both), to bolster demand. For those who can afford it, luxury cruises offer a strong value proposition, especially in the current economic quagmire.
